CHAPTER SIX

“You do know that I’ve always had a thing for her, right?” Ricardo said before sucking on his straw. He and Books had been sitting in the cafeteria for over an hour, waiting for Riley; in her absence, Books mentioned her plan to set Riley up with a handsome friend of hers. Ricardo reacted quite jealously, and this jealousy was exactly what Books hoped to see. Men were usually unaware of what they wanted until it was suggested to them or – in this case – offered to someone else.

“You do? Since when?” Books asked, feigning ignorance and shielding her true intentions.

“Since forever, Books,” Ricardo confessed shyly. “For someone named Bookie, you seem pretty bad at reading emotions,” he added.

Books could not keep herself from laughing for a while. Then, she looked at him thoughtfully, “I know you like her; I have always known that. But since you’ve kept a lid on it all this time, I’ve also acted like I didn’t notice. Quick question, though. Since you’re bringing it up now, do you plan to act on your feelings?” she asked, curious.

“Okay, first of all, you’re cruel for noticing and saying nothing. Secondly, I don’t know Books. Should I? Can I?” Ricardo asked with a pained expression on his face.

“Of course, you can. Be a man, damn it,” Books insisted.

“What if Riley doesn’t feel the same? Imagine what would that do to our friendship. I’d have ruined a perfectly good thing,” Ricardo uttered in frustration.

“Or,” Books said, “you’d get what you want. The choice is yours, but I think you have a shot.”

“A shot at what?” Riley quipped, appearing behind Ricardo all of a sudden and placing a hand on his shoulder. Books saw the man shake slightly as if a shiver of shock went through his bloodstream. She laughed as she had seen Riley coming but didn’t inform him on purpose. Beads of sweat gathered on Ricardo’s forehead as his mind began to wonder whether he had been heard.

“A shot at what? Come on, guys, don’t leave me out of the loop,” Riley repeated with a pout on her peach-colored lips. Ricardo could not keep his eyes off them.

“A shot at going to the movies with me tonight. You deserve a treat before you start your duties, madam director,” Ricardo uttered, holding his breath.

“Only if you throw in ice cream,” Riley replied.

“Deal. I’ll pick you up by seven?” he asked.

“And have me home before ten,” Riley said, rolling her eyes.

Ricardo nodded. “Something like that, yes.”

“Books, are you coming?” Riley asked, turning to her best friend.

“Huh? Me? No, no, I have to do something tonight. You two should have fun,” Books answered. A little later, Ricardo excused himself and pecked both women on their cheeks, allowing his lips to linger on Riley’s a little longer.

“You heard some of what we discussed, didn’t you?” Books said when they were alone.

“Not really, but I can put two things together,” Riley confessed.

“So, what have you put together?” Books asked this time.

“Ricardo likes me?” she guessed.
